The Queen`s Speech

In the United Kingdom, the Queen comes to Westminster and delivers the Speech from the Throne. It is written for her by the Government. It sets out the main Government Bills for the forthcoming session.

Tucked away in the announcements was the announcement that the Government intended to introduce a Human Tissues and Embryos Bill. It is said that the Bill if it becomes law (which it will) will ensure the creation and use of all human embryos outside the body is regulated.

The bill also proposes a ban on selecting the sex of babies for non-medical reasons and would recognise same-sex couples as legal parents of children conceived through the use of donated sperm, eggs or embryos.

It applies to the whole UK, although there are some provisions involving the changes to legal parenthood in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

You can also bet that the Bill will also cover many other issues in this very contentious and delicate area.
