James Tissot 1836 – 1902
Behold, He Standeth behind Our Wall
Gouache (214 × 124 cm) — 1886 - 1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York City

The title is derived from a verse in the book of Canticles (Canticles 2:9):

"My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice."
