The Dordogne at Beynac

Félix Vallotton 1865 - 1925
The Dordogne at Beynac 1925
Oil on canvas
73 x 54 cm
Private Collection

In June 1925 Vallotton realised a long held dream: to visit the Dordogne. It was his last trip

For ten days he visited the area between Angoulème, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Rodez and Cahors. In a letter to his brother he described it as «le plus beau pays du monde»

On his return he painted this work of the medieval village of Beynac. It is an example of «paysage composé». All the elements of the composition exist in reality: the cliff, the castle, the lake but altered through the imagination and technique of the artist to produce a rather disturbing work
